Picture Window: A window that cannot be opened, whose function is limited to allowing light to enter.
Double hung: This window has two parts (sashes) that overlap slightly and slide up and down inside the frame. The two parts are not necessarily the same size
Single Hung: Is similar to the double hung, but only one sash is movable (usually the bottom one) and the other fixed.
Slider: This window has 2 sashes that overlap slightly and slide horizontally in the frame. It may have 2 or more sashes.
Single Slider: This window is similar to the slider, but only one sash is movable and the other fixed.
Casement: A window with a hinged sash that swings in or out like a door, and is opened using a crank.
Awning: An awning window is a casement window that is hung horizontally, hinged on top, so that it swings outward like an awning.
Hopper: A hopper window is a bottom hung casement window that opens similar to a draw bridge typically opening to the outside.
Bay: A multi-panel window, with three panels set at different angles to create a protrusion from the wall line.
Bow: Similar to a Bay window, typically with more than 3 sashes.
Patio Door: This door is similar to single slider window, where one sash is fixed while the other slides horizontally. This door may also include more than 2 sashes or a picture window above called a transom.
Garden Door: This door system involves 2 sashes that swing, rather than slide, either in or out. One sash may be fixed while the other is hinged, or both may be hinged.
Front Entry Door: Typically a solid door hinged to swing in or out. This door may be a system with 2 doors, include a transom or a side lite, a window attached to the side of the door. It may or may not have a window in the door itself.
